Garden Shed vs Summerhouse: Which Do You Actually Need?
Storage or somewhere to sit? How sheds, summer sheds and summer houses differ, and how to choose the right one for your garden.
Buying guide
Shed or summer house?
It comes down to one question: are you going to store things in it, or spend time in it?
The quick decider
Choose a shed if…
- It's mainly for tools, bikes and the mower
- You want the lowest price per square foot
- Privacy or security matters more than light
Choose a summer house if…
- You want a room to sit, read, work or train in
- Light and a view of the garden matter
- It will be a focal point you look at from the house
Choose a summer shed if…
- You want both
- You need a storage end and a sitting end
- You want windows without a fully glazed front
What's actually different
A shed is built for storage: solid walls, a practical door and windows only where you want them. A summer house is built for people: more glazing, double doors that open the front up and a layout that puts the view first. A summer shed sits in between, with windows and double doors at the front and plenty of wall space for storage.
All three are made from the same pressure-treated timber with 15-year anti-rot protection, and all are delivered flat-packed the next working day when you order by 2pm.
