The Annual Shed Maintenance Checklist: Season by Season
A simple season-by-season checklist that keeps a pressure-treated timber shed dry, solid and looking good for years.
Care
Five minutes a season keeps your shed going
Pressure-treated timber is protected from rot, but a little attention keeps the roof sound, the doors swinging and the inside dry.
Spring
- ✓Check the roof felt for lifting edges, tears or missing nails after the winter
- ✓Clear leaves and moss from the roof and any gutters
- ✓Open the doors and windows on dry days to air the inside
- ✓Ease and lubricate hinges and the lock
Summer
- ✓Apply a coloured timber treatment if you want to refresh the look (optional — about every 2–3 years)
- ✓Cut back plants so nothing grows against the walls
- ✓Check the doors still close easily — if not, the base may have moved
Autumn
- ✓Clear fallen leaves from the roof and from around the base
- ✓Make sure soil and mulch aren't piled against the walls
- ✓Check window seals and the roof edges before the winter weather
Winter
- ✓Brush heavy snow off the roof
- ✓Keep stored items off the walls so air can circulate
- ✓Check inside after storms for any drips or damp patches
When to act quickly
A tear in the felt, a door that suddenly sticks, or a damp patch inside are all easier to fix early. Re-nail or patch felt as soon as you spot damage, and if the building has moved, check the base is still level. If you're unsure, send us a photo and we'll advise.
Fed up with re-felting?
An EPDM rubber roof is a single seamless sheet that doesn't need patching.
